Project overview

Situated in the coastal hamlet of Barwon Heads, this beautiful family home has the best of both worlds. The family had a block of land looking across the Barwon river with all the benefits of living in a small coastal community. With the property backing onto a nature reserve, the use of natural materials was one of the highest priorities for these clients. This architecturally designed modern family home needed to provide open space living, clean lines and natural finishes throughout.

Challenge

The challenge was to capture the incredible uninterrupted views surrounding this parcel of land. With the client’s intention to build a double storey home, things such as the soil condition and potential drainage issues were always at the forefront of any design and planning proposal. The need to construct something unique yet not interrupt the natural environment was always going to be challenge. Orientation of the home to utilise the passive solar aspects available but also capture those subtle breezes that only natural waterways provide, played a big part in the overall design and construction of this home.

The clients wish list, and open communication with the architect provided the following key components of this new home:

  • Uninterrupted views
  • The use of timber windows and doors throughout
  • Open plan living with subtle hidden getaways
  • Clean lines and angles to enhance space and dimensions
  • Sleek & clean finishes

Result

Sitting proudly in its own environment, this home has encapsulated everything the clients had wished for. The views from all sides of this home provide a different aspect of the natural elements that surround it. Large entertaining areas, highlight windows and the ever-present touch and feel of timber give this home a warm feeling whilst always having that subtle reminder of a watery breeze in the background. The neutral tomes within and the large expanses of glazing give the effect of bringing the outside inside wherever you are in the home.
